Shockwave Therapy

Advanced acoustic wave technology to accelerate healing, reduce chronic pain, and break the cycle of stubborn injuries.

At Excelsius Wellness, Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is available as part of your physiotherapy treatment plan on the Sunshine Coast. Where clinically appropriate, your physiotherapist will incorporate shockwave therapy into your session to stimulate your body’s natural repair process and resolve injuries that haven’t responded to standard treatment alone.

Shockwave therapy is included in the cost of your physiotherapy consultation — there is no additional charge.

What Can Shockwave Therapy Help With?

Shockwave therapy is a proven treatment for chronic and stubborn musculoskeletal conditions, particularly those that have plateaued with standard treatment. Your physiotherapist may recommend shockwave therapy as part of your plan to assist with:

  • Plantar Fasciitis: Reducing heel and arch pain caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia.
  • Tendinopathies: Treating chronic tendon conditions such as Achilles tendinopathy, tennis elbow, and golfer’s elbow.
  • Shoulder Pain: Addressing calcific tendinitis and rotator cuff-related pain.
  • Muscle Tightness & Trigger Points: Releasing chronic muscle knots and myofascial tension.
  • Chronic Scar Tissue: Breaking down adhesions and improving tissue mobility after injury.

Why Choose a Physiotherapist for Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy is a precise clinical treatment that relies on accurately identifying the source of your pain, not just where it hurts.

Because it’s delivered by a qualified physiotherapist as part of your broader consultation, shockwave therapy is never applied in isolation. We conduct a full clinical assessment to confirm the diagnosis, determine whether shockwave is appropriate for your condition, and integrate it alongside manual therapy and exercise rehabilitation. This ensures the treatment is targeted to your specific injury and supports your overall recovery plan, not just a stand-alone fix.

What to Expect During Your Session

If your physiotherapist determines shockwave therapy is appropriate for your condition, it will be incorporated into your regular consultation.

  1. Assessment: Your physiotherapist will assess the affected area and confirm whether shockwave therapy is a suitable addition to your treatment plan.
  2. Application: A conductive gel is applied, and a handheld device delivers targeted acoustic pulses to the injured tissue, typically taking 5 to 10 minutes within your session. You may feel mild discomfort during treatment.
  3. Aftercare: You may experience some soreness for 24 to 48 hours, similar to post-exercise fatigue. Your physiotherapist will guide you on activity modification and any complementary exercises to support your recovery.

Most conditions respond best to a course of treatment over several consecutive sessions. Your physiotherapist will discuss this with you as part of your ongoing plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Shockwave therapy is not booked as a stand-alone service. Where clinically appropriate, your physiotherapist will incorporate it into your regular physiotherapy consultation at no extra cost.

Shockwave therapy can cause some discomfort during treatment, particularly over the most sensitive area of injury, but most patients tolerate it well. Your physiotherapist will adjust the intensity to keep it within a manageable range.

This depends on your condition and will be built into your treatment plan by your physiotherapist, typically as part of a course of consultations over several weeks.

Mild redness, bruising, or soreness in the treated area is common and typically resolves within a couple of days. Serious side effects are rare.

Shockwave therapy isn’t suitable for pregnant women, people with pacemakers, active infections, blood clotting disorders, or over certain areas such as the lungs or major nerves/blood vessels. Your physiotherapist will screen for this as part of your assessment.
